The Left Party reveals: Incorrect heating bills at Vonovia in Reudnitz – around 150 tenants affected
Leipzig, 26. August 2025
In a Vonovia apartment building in Leipzig-Reudnitz, around 150 tenants are affected by incorrect heating bills. This was uncovered by the heating cost check carried out by the Left Party, in which Leipzig state parliament representative Nam Duy Nguyen and his team were also involved.
“Seventeen of 47 buildings in Leipzig-Reudnitz are affected by incorrect heating bills. The situation is still unclear for another five buildings”, explains Nam Duy Nguyen. The reason: many landlords calculate heating costs incorrectly. If a building does not have a central heat meter, tenants are legally entitled to reduce their heating and hot water costs by a flat rate of 15 percent.
The case was uncovered by the heating cost check carried out by the Left Party, which has been offering free checks of heating bills since fall 2024. Numerous tenants in Munich and Berlin have already been able to secure large refunds with the help of the check. In Munich, the Left Party, together with those affected, was able to secure a total of approximately €1 million in refunds.
On September 4, party activists are organizing a tenants’ meeting together with affected tenants to exchange experiences and jointly demand a 15 percent reduction.
The campaign is part of the city campaign “The city belongs to all of us.” The goal is to organize tenants in Leipzig against excessive rent and heating costs. The Left Party is looking for more “rent detectives” to check their heating costs and take action.
“Real estate companies have excellent connections in politics and millions in their bank accounts. We tenants only have each other—but there are many of us”, explains Elisabeth Fritsch. “We need all the help we can get to put an end to excessive rents and utility costs.”
