Not only do we need a different policy, we also need different politicians
Leipzig, 22. June 2024
First district assembly Leipzig Center-East: 250 supporters from the district send the state parliament candidate Nam Duy Nguyen into an extraordinary election campaign for a direct mandate in the constituency.
The 28-year-old Left Party state parliamentary candidate Nam Duy Nguyen and his team kicked off his campaign today with a district meeting in the Kupfersaal, which was attended by around 250 people. The special thing about this is that the focus of his election campaign is on the issues that move the district. To this end, over 100 volunteers have already rung 5,000 doorbells and identified the most important campaign issues from these conversations. Inflation, housing and transport are at the heart of the campaign.
At the event, which was attended by residents from all districts of the constituency, they first had their say. A nurse from the university hospital reported on his experiences in wage disputes, residents discussed rising rents and spoke out in favor of free public transport and better cycle paths. Marlen Borchardt from the election campaign team: “We want to make policies that not only give people the feeling that they are heard and that they count, but we also want to make policies together with our neighbors, colleagues and friends.” For example, visitors to the event had the opportunity to vote on the young candidate’s election posters.
Nguyen, who was born in Riesa and is the child of Vietnamese contract workers, emphasized: “The experiences you have shared with us are the beginning of what we want to create here and now. Here in Leipzig, in our neighborhoods, we want to show on a small scale how politics and our coexistence could look different.” If he is elected to the state parliament, he would like to cap his salary at 2,500 euros a month and give the surplus back to the district – “high salaries lead to high politics,” says Nguyen.
In view of the CDU and AfD majority in the Saxon state parliament, he emphasized that he could not make any unrealistic promises. He sees his task as “exerting pressure, no matter how few we are” and “keeping a close eye on those in power, and doing so thoroughly.”
A two-week campaign week, to which supporters from all over Germany will travel, a summer festival and a further 15,000 door-to-door talks are planned for the summer.
